"The Thompson Twins, as anyone familiar with the tale will know, were a radically different outfit to what they later became when they crossed the atlantic to become the pop music giants of 1984. A seven member lineup knocked out this offering. A rather unique blend of percussion led African music, chanting, furious beats and energetic playing, mostly on traditional instruments. Yes, there's guitars, drums, and no synths. It's a very enjoyable listen, and quite similar to Talking Heads' output up to 1980; the African percussion used on Fear Of Music and Remain In Light (probably one of my all time favourite albums), and the sparse simple production of '77 and More Songs...'.
Included in this version is the radio session this early lineup did for the BBC, which has been released by Strange Fruit on vinyl (in the mid '80s I think) but never on CD. This CD is essential for any Thompson Twins fan."

"Once again, the Thompson Twins released this album with the same creative flames burning as the first. It's quite similar, though perhaps a stronger album (although I personally prefer the first). Despite the reliance on traditional instruments, we see the first hints of the sound that would propel the Twins to the dizzying heights of Live Aid, endless US tours and stadium concerts. In The Name Of Love is Tom Bailey casting off the shackles of the guitar and embracing the cold harsh synth. It's electronic and you can dance to it. And the Americans did, and loved it. From here the Twins dropped a few hundred band members (well, a few anyway) and condensed to Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie and Joe Leeway. It was now time to quick step and side kick.
[1] The live sets with the pre-1983 'Twins were apparently something spectacular, and at one stage or another included musicians who would later join other famous bands. To quote from Wikipedia's article on the Thompson Twins:

"In The Name Of Love was the American answer to the first two 'Twins albums A Product Of, and Set. In similar style to the American "Meet The Beatles", In The Name Of Love combined the "best" of the first two albums, to make it more palatable for the American market, and also cash in on the success of the single, which was riding high in the dance charts at the time. I've put together this new version of it, and inluded alternate versions of songs, and some early bonus tracks. I'm not sure which mixes were used on the original ITNOL album, but I'm sure the US mix of the title track would be used, and an alternate mix of Make Believe, so I've included these instead. There's also a strange mix of Bouncing I've used, and an extended version of Runaway. Combined with the bonus tracks, which are early singles and an excellent b-side - Coastline, this CD sits nicely alongside the custom versions of A Product Of and Set that I have. Note: this is not the same as the 'original album' since I've used different versions, but the track listing is the same.
Review
I can understand why this album came to exist. Obviously, potential Thompson Twins fans being impressed with the new synthpop direction of the breakthrough single would be somewhat confused by the experimental nature of A Product Of, so only two of its tracks make it onto this album. Predictably enough, one of them is Perfect Game, which sounds like classic era 'Twins anyway. As for Set, Tok Tok, Crazy Dog and Blind are omitted - hardly surprising. Though great, these are hardly commercial offerings. I read on Blake Bell's old site that Good Gosh was bumped all the way down to last track since it was written by Joe Leeway and not Tom Bailey. This seems odd."

"This was the Twins' most innovative album. It also marked a very new and sharp artistic direction. Quickstep and Sidekick was miles away from their late 70's experimental material. Yet, this material was not yet considered mainstream or new wave/pop at this point in their careers. Using state of the art (for the time) synthesizer technology, heavy,heavy doses of percussion infused with exotic global rhythms and sometimes offbeat and humorous lyrics you could quickly identify their unique trademark sound!The Thompson Twins were/are original! This is the album that spawned a few club tracks as well as college radio, alternative(for 1983) rock album and even R&B favorites. Their music could not be strictly classified as New Wave for it lacked the cold and artificially intelligent sounds of say groups like the Human League or Kraftwerk (yet, the only thing remotely comparable to the League was Tom Bailey's dead panned monotone vocals akin to Phil Oakey's). If you listened carefully to some of the bass lines on a few tracks and creative danceable beats there was plenty of funk derivative ingredients as well which made this album easily playable on R&B, Soul and dance stations at the time. Glad they included the re-mixes on this expanded edition. The re-mixes are essential in fully understanding what I'm talking about in the previous statement about the funk derivative bass lines and percussion (Love On Your Side-Rap Boy Rap, Lies-Bigger and Better) ! "

"This is a first class package. It has great sound, restored UK track order plus some great bonus tracks. The liner notes and booklet art are great. Really pretty much everything you could ask for. Agreed, it would have been cool to have a CD package with the bonus track that were on Arista's original cassette version released in the US (a whole side of remixes including Beach Culture) but then this would have been a 2 Cd set. The album itself still rings true as one of the best of the 80s. If you have been holding off on buying the very pricey Japanese version, then by all means rush out to get this one.. "

"1984 was truly the "Year of the Thompson Twins". After they appeared on the 1983 MTV New Years Eve ball, where they debuted a new song of theirs called "Hold Me Now", the Thompson Twins were set for world domination. Their album "Quick Step and Side Kick" had already made a big sensation in the United Kingdom and other European countries, but "Into the Gap" was the album that brought them strong success in the United States. "Into the Gap" has a strange thing going on. On the one hand, it's a beautifully crafted album, carrying forward with the theme of their previous record, which brought together quirky synth sounds with warm bass and percussion. "Into the Gap" focuses even more on the songwriting and arrangement, with stunning results. And yet....it's 2006, and this album seems to only be remembered by 80s purists. Something about it contributed to it being written off as a period piece, forever identified with the 80s. I can understand why when you take the band's image, which was very cartoonish and "new wave" (whatever that term was supposed to mean). They had weird hair, strange clothes, and Alannah Currie shaved off her eyebrows. On this record, she even had a "mohawk". But if you would divorce the Thompson Twins from their then-commerical fashion sense, you'd find a gorgeous album in "Into the Gap". Shimmering synths exist alongside intricately-programmed drum patterns and live percussion that give it depth. Timpanis, bells, toms, the full range of percussion is represented here. Even more melodic than "Side Kicks", this album explores a fascination with Eastern cultures and melodies."

"I still love this album! The songs are still in my head. More than just Hold Me Now-the rest of the album is just as superb. Smartly done pop songs with loads of rhythm and catchy choruses. They have some mean funk beds on songs like Into the Gap and No Peace for the Wicked and Who Can Stop The Rain. Doctor, Doctor, while unusual, has some unique pop landscapes. It was the group's finest moment--no other album they did before or after could top this. "

" will be the first to admit that Into the Gap isn't quite the album Quick Step and Side Kick is. That's because QS&SK is the second-best album of the early synthpop assault (behind Fad Gadget's Under the Flag). But Into the Gap is still an AMAZING piece of pop history, and it's freaking criminal that Arista hasn't realized the GEM of the '80s that it's got here. This album is every last bit as deserving as any other of a deluxe re-release packed with bonuses.
"Hold Me Now," while VERY dissatisfying to us Thommos (ugh, that word) fans, is perhaps the quintessential new wave ballad, and "Doctor! Doctor!" is brilliant in its own overwrought way.
But you should buy this album for the simply gorgeous "Storm On the Sea" and the totally killer "Day After Day."
No, it's not as chilly/emotive/funny as the BRILLIANT Quick Step and Side Kick, and it's not quite on my list of 10 desert island discs. But Into The Gap is still pretty close to perfect as a sterling example of the kind of genius that could hit the charts in the '80s."

"Heres To Future Days" is an album that was ahead of it's time and different than most of the other Thompson Twins albums. I didn't really get into this album until the 90's. The album is a good listen from the first song to the last. Songs like "You Killed The Clown, "Breakaway," and "Don't Mess With Doctor Dream" are cool, and even the Beatles cover of "Revolution" is good. This album is worth buying and adding to your music collection and I believe it deserved more acclaim in the U.S."

""Here's To Future Days" was the turning point for the Thompson Twins, who had been a steadily mounting commercial force in both the United States and the United Kingdom since 1983's "Quick Step and Side Kick" album. The turning point wound up not being a very good one for the Twins. Signed to Arista records, apparently there was a lot of pressure on the quirky synthpop band to become a stadium rock outfit; the mega-success of their 1984 "Into the Gap" album had resulted in a near-constant touring schedule for them, plus the work they'd started on the follow-up to "Gap" came to a halt when Tom Bailey collapsed from exhaustion in 1985. "Here's to Future Days" was the record he was trying to complete at the time. Nile Rodgers was brought in to help finish the album as producer, and he gave it a flashy rock sound that was at odds with anything the Thompson Twins had done up until that point. While "Here's To Future Days" is not a crap record, it's a crap Thompson Twins record. Gone is the glossy, hypnotic work of Alex Sadkin, who was part of the successful Thompson Twins equation for two albums. In its place are things like the ill-advised cover of the Beatles "Revolution" and the half-assed funk of "Love Is the Law". Hardcore fans complain a lot about the US version of "Lay Your Hands On Me", but it's the least of the offenses here, and the Nile Rodgers version is just as good as the original Alex Sadkin cut. Where they went wrong here is in the details. "Into the Gap" only had one or two throwaway cuts, like "No Peace For The Wicked", and was a very solid effort. Not so here; they could have jettisoned stuff like "Tokyo", "Breakaway" and "Love Is the Law" and nobody would have known the difference. I have to admit I'm confused by one previous commenter, who asserts that the "American" version of "Here's To Future Days" is to be avoided. The only difference in the United States version of this album is the inclusion of the album's best track, "Roll Over", which was removed from all other versions because the Twins felt superstitious about it; it was to be the first single release just before Tom Bailey's collapse. "Lay Your Hands On Me" and "King For A Day" sound exactly the same on the UK release. The alternate lyrics for "King For A Day" were actually going to be released in the UK as the b-side to "Roll Over", and probably never would have seen the light of day in the United States if it hadn't been included as an unusual bonus on the "Greatest Mixes" compilation three years after."

This was given away free as compensation to ticket holders of the cancelled shows of a 1985 tour. Live the Thompson Twins were impressive, and (due to the presence of many support musicians) managed to keep together the full sound and visual onslaught with which they were associated.

"Close to the Bone", the first CD the Thompson Twins recorded as a duo (after the loss of long-time member Joe Leeway), shows a musical maturity... but a slight loss of heart. Whether it was the loss of Joe or the circumstances surrounding the Twins at the time -- you can tell that the shine, fun, and heart was mostly lacking with this CD.
Luckily, there are definitely some choice cuts to keep any Twins' fan happy. Tom Bailey's vocals show great maturity on the guitar driven "Follow Your Heart" and the exuberant bounciness of "Twentieth Century". Alannah Currie's lyrics have also matured, especially the farewell to her recently deceased Mother on "Long Goodbye" and the devastating results of war on "Perfect Day". Toss in the light fluffiness of "Get That Love" and the frog (yes, ribbit ribbit) layered keyboard action of "Bush Baby", and I bet you'll walk away satisfied.
Though "Close to the Bone" is not the best of their repertoire, it is still a decent listening experience for anyone that enjoys the highly-capable offerings of the Thompson Twins."

"If you are a TT fan like I am, you probably compare everything to "Into the Gap". I do agree that it was an excellent album although I think Queer was even better. However, even though this album is totally different than everything they've done, don't make the big mistake of dismissing it! First of all, as an artist myself, I am still trying to make drums sound this good. They rock on this album! Never before could you hear Tom Bailey's voice so harsh and letting go. Joe Leeway had just left the twins and you can feel the anger and dissapointment. A must-have for any TT fan."

"This CD was basically just a filler to get the Twins out of their Arista contract... and it shows. Aside from the 1988 remix of "In the Name of Love", and a previously unavailable mix of "King For a Day"... there is nothing else on this CD that a die-hard Twins fan has not already heard. In fact, most of the mixes were shortened from their original incarnations.
That being said... if you are a fan of the Twins and their ability to hypnotize you with their undeniably catchy hooks and melodies, this CD is right up your alley."

I think the best songs are the catchy Sugar Daddy, Bombers In The Sky, This Girl Is On Fire and my favorite Dirty Summer's Day. Dirty Summer's Day should have been a single- lots of remix potential. I only hope that the Thompson Twins or Babble or whatever they want to call themselves continue to make great music."

"Queer was by far the best Thompson Twins album; and I daresay c.s. dramatically unfair review is considering Queer in context of listening today rather than 12 years ago. While previous T.T. efforts were very pop-oriented and almost hackneyed new wave, Queer was truly innovative. When it came out, the hooks and beats were well in advance of their time; obviously created by people who were deeply intouch with the underground techno and house scenes at the time. In fact, I always felt if the album had come out 4 years later, the popular culture would have better accepted it, especially since its choice of themes was so prescient. Besides the quality of the music, the lyrics are decidedly more philisophical and spiritual. Other reviews have mentioned many of my favorite tracks; so I'll mention others that have been missed. The title track is pulsing and jittery; a musical analogue to the same-titled track by Garbage that would follow. "Jane" reminds me of an old Squeeze song; not terribly advanced but sticks in the mind. "Wind it Up" about religious themes. "Come Inside" is repetetive, but one imagines that hypnotic grooves is exactly the point, made clear with the remix. And these are not the best. I swore that half the industry cannibalized this CD for years after I first heard it, and in context of today it is still a pure delight. So clean and crisp, it all fits together and presents a message of positivity and lucidity."

"There were these songs that I always liked in the 80's. It wasn't until Christmas 2005 that I found out that the songs (In the Name of Love, Doctor! Doctor! Lies) were performed by the Thompson Twins. So, I bought one of their "Greatest Hits" collections and re-discovered them, for myself. Now, the reason for my purchase of the 12-inch Collection. Normally, I try my best to avoid buying an album for "one song." However, I've always longed for an extended version of "Hold Me Now." Clocking in at 9:45, the song, in my opinion, is pure gold! So, do I regret spending $20/US for this disc? In a word, NO! Save up some cash, and purchase this collection! You will NOT BE SORRY!! Five stars!"
