Biography:
Brilliant were a British pop/rock group active in the 1980s. Although not commercially successful and mauled by the critics, they remain notable because of the personnel involved - Martin Glover aka Youth, formerly of Killing Joke and subsequently a top producer/remixer; Jimmy Cauty, later to find fame and fortune as one half of The KLF; and (prior to the band signing with WEA) Ben Watkins aka Juno Reactor. Equally notable was their management (David Balfe), their record company A&R manager (Bill Drummond, the other member of The KLF), and production team (Stock Aitken Waterman).
Brilliant first came to life in 1982, as post-punk band Killing Joke was crumbling under internal conflicts. Unsatisfied with his bandmates' following of the occult lifestyle, Killing Joke's bass player Youth decided to call it quits and recorded an angry slandering song against his former bandmates. The song, That's What Good Friends Are For..., an obvious mock of Killing Joke's sophomore release What's THIS for...!, was credited to "Brilliant", which was a name of a Killing Joke b-side and a general 1980s buzzword.
For the first incarnation of Brilliant as a full band, Youth recruited Marcus Myers on vocals and guitar, a second bass player Guy Pratt (who left for the Australian band Icehouse and was replaced by frenchman Stephane "Tin Tin" Holweck), and the two drummers Andy Anderson (The Cure) and Peter Ogi. They released one single, Colours, through Rough Trade Records (with a sleeve by Mark Manning) and recorded a BBC session for John Peel. Overall through its four years of existence the band hosted a roster of roughly 30 players until reducing to the trio of Youth, Cauty and female vocalist June Montana.
The band released several singles and one album - Kiss the Lips of Life - before splitting up.

the version of All Music:
The short-lived trio known as Brilliant is a lot more interesting as a rock family tree entry than for the one album the group produced. Despite the band's failure to make much of an impact, it contained two of the '80s most notable musical figures: ex-Killing Joke bassist Youth (as musician:The Orb;Brilliant;Blue Pearl /as producer:Crowded House ;James) and guitarist Jimmy Cauty(Justified Ancients of Mu-Mu, The Timelords, The KLF, The Orb, K Foundation, 2K, Blacksmoke, Solid Gold Chartbusters, Transit Kings) who'd worked with Zodiac Mindwarp and would go on to greater acclaim later in the decade as part of the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, the KLF, and the Orb. Together with vocalist June Montana, a session singer noted for her work with the Dream Academy, they became Brilliant, after the band's original lineup was trimmed from ten members to just three. Beginning as a funky, Killing Joke-inspired band with a couple of singles on the Rough Trade label, the group was managed by Dave Balfe, the former keyboardist of the Teardrop Explodes, and was signed by rock raconteur Bill Drummond to WEA, where their 1986 album, Kiss the Lips of Life, was overseen by the soon-to-be-ascendant pop production team of Stock Aitken Waterman. But for all the high-profile contacts, Brilliant only mustered a couple of hits -- a reggae-fied version of James Brown's "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" had some success in the band's native U.K., while the dance-rock "Somebody" got play in American clubs -- before calling it a day soon after the album's release, and allowing Cauty and Youth to move on to bigger and better things. ~ Dan LeRoy, All Music Guide

Thanks so much for this. It's, well... brilliant.
Have you got June Montana's solo single from '92 "How Many Hearts"?- it was produced by George Michael, I believe.
Have had Kiss The Lips of Life album since '86- but only on vinyl- so really appreciate you posting this- and the Peel Session etc...

I totally agree with the article.
This post was very nicely written, and it also carries a lot of useful facts. I appreciated your professed way of writing this post. Thanks, it is very easy for me to understand.
Hi there, any chance of re-upping the downloads for both Kiss the Lips of Life and the bonus singles CD? I use to have all these on vinyl and would love to have them available again. Thanks.
Chuck

Hi
Any chance of re-ups on these links?
Thanks in advance :)
Hi there. I'm also hoping you might be able to re-up, particularly the bonus singles.
That would be, errr...brilliant :)
Marcus Myers and June Montana were the only singers in this band, June was the backing singer and took over when Marcus left just before they signed the big record deal. He wanted to move in a different direction. Contrary to popular belief Marcus wrote most of the lyrics, while he was in the band."Thats what good friends are for" was written about him leaving Brighton to join Brilliant. He had been in "Midnight & the Lemon boys, but thats another story for you to look up.. He went on to be in Hard Rain, Then Jericho and Alishas Attic. He also toured with Belinda Carlisle, Plavka and Maria Naylor as a session guitarist.
He now lives in Andalusia Spain, still playing music.
Sometimes you just have to put the record straight
