More Aztec Camera

Knife (1984)

Roundly trashed upon its fall 1984 release -- many reviewers took the album almost as a personal insult -- Knife is nowhere near as terrible an album as it seemed at the time. One must remember the circumstances, however: 1983's High Land Hard Rain, as well as the preceding singles on the legendary Postcard and Les Disques du Crepuscule labels, had presented Roddy Frame and crew as the jazz and folk-inflected, acoustic guitar-slinging saviors of pop music from the synth-driven hordes. Knife, on the other hand, was (yikes!) produced by Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler, who (gasp!) brought in a pair of keyboard players to color Frame's (shriek!) newly R&B-flavored pop songs. In retrospect, though, Knife is, while deeply flawed, a thoughtful and largely likable set of tunes. There are three killer singles, the danceable "Still on Fire," "Just Like the USA" (which features a jiggly guitar riff that almost turns into the hook from the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" in a few spots), and the sublime "All I Need Is Everything," a lovely, yearning tune based on a hypnotic guitar riff and featuring possibly the best chorus of Frame's career. Slightly below that fine triumvirate are "The Birth of the True" and the stirring "Backwards and Forwards," which both recall the pretty but slightly strident ballads of Frame's early career, and the peppier "Head Is Happy (Heart's Insane)," all of which are perfectly respectable tunes. Then, though, comes the bland, forgettable "The Back Door to Heaven," and the truly horrible title track, which stretches out too few musical or lyrical ideas over an endless, nearly ten-minute track that seems to be going for a Dire Straits-like ambience but merely sounds noodly and insipid. With a more sympathetic producer and a less obvious method of filler (why not record new versions of those early singles?), Knife would have made it past the cultural arbiters. As it was, Aztec Camera never really recovered.

Love (1987)

Roddy Frame dispensed with the previous members of Aztec Camera and turned to a group of American session musicians and high-powered producers (Russ Titelman, Tommy LiPuma) for his third full-length album, on which he also abandoned his singer/songwriter, folk-rock approach in favor of an American R&B style. It's a distinct step down from the ingenuity of his first couple of records, and was met with indifference in the U.S., which seemed to be its intended target. In the U.K., the album belatedly took off after its second single, "Somewhere In My Heart," went to #3, and became Aztec Camera's only Top Ten LP. (Other U.K. chart singles were "How Men Are" [#25] and "Working In A Goldmine" [#31].)

Stray (1990)

A welcome comeback after the flaccid dance-pop of 1987's insipid Love, Stray is among Roddy Frame's most assured and diverse collections of songs. Unlike previous Aztec Camera albums, there's not one unifying style to the disc, and the variety makes Stray one of Frame's better collections. From the assured rocking pop of the singles "The Crying Scene" (the closest thing Aztec Camera ever got to an American hit single) and "Good Morning Britain" (a rousing collaboration with Mick Jones of the Clash and Big Audio Dynamite) to the cool, Chet Baker-ish cocktail jazz of "Over My Head," Frame covers the waterfront, but it's the quartet of songs that constitutes the second half of the album that impress the most. These four songs, "How It Is," "The Gentle Kind," "Notting Hill Blues," and the tender acoustic closer "Song For A Friend," are a loosely connected cycle mingling folk, soul, and pop in varying proportions. Starting with a bitterly cynical denunciation of modern society, the four songs move through sadness and resignation to a hopeful, sweet closure. Shorn of the pretentiousness that mars some of Frame's earlier lyrics -- written, to be fair, while he was still in his mid-teens -- the lyrics on Stray are the first that stand up to Frame's remarkable melodic sense. The simple, low-key production by Frame and Eric Calvi also retreats from the unfortunate excesses of both Love and its misbegotten Mark Knopfler-produced predecessor, Knife. With the exception of Aztec Camera's 1983 debut High Land Hard Rain, this is Roddy Frame's best album.

Dreamland (1993)

Whoever got the idea of putting erstwhile lo-tech pop hero Roddy Frame in the studio with the legendarily hi-tech keyboardist/ composer/ producer Ryuichi Sakamoto ought to at least get credit for thinking outside the box. And if the experiment wasn't an unqualified success, well, that's what usually happens when you think outside the box. Dreamland is far from a failure; by this point in his career, Frame's pop craft is too instinctive to permit that. But Sakamoto does occasionally threaten to overwhelm the songs with his patented super-smooth production and studio fripperies (those strings! those backing vocals!), and in a few cases the songs themselves aren't structurally capable of supporting all that added weight. Several tracks, in particular the rather silly "Spanish Horses," will leave you thinking "Gosh, that was pretty. How did it go again?" And "Safe in Sorrow," a gorgeous pop/soul ballad, feels like it wants to go twice as fast as it does, but can't. All that said, there are some great moments here, including the aching "Let Your Love Decide" and the slightly creepy "Valium Summer"; fans of the Camera should like this album just fine.

Between Sadistic Mika Band and YMO. Sakamoto arranges and co-produces. RS was nicknamed The Professor back then. Hosono plays bass. Currently Budget priced. Here we have an early (if not the first) appearance by all YMO members. A good example of late 70s studio pop. Not really related to their later Technopop sound.

A Technopop classic.Should appeal to early era YMO fans.

"The two 1982 albums are pleasant surprises, with playing and material that's at once aggressive and arty. Murdered by the Music (from 1980 but unreleased in the West for two years) is the more goofy and eclectic. The What, Me Worry? EP features three tracks from the LP of the same name — one with Japanese lyrics this time — plus another bright original and a sprightly cover of an old German tune."

A fine album . Should appeal to YMO fans though none of the YMO period solos tried to duplicate the more instrumental based YMO sound. There was a British music movement at the time called "New Romantic" which included stuff from for example Roxy Music, whom YT admired and OMD, a contemporary act. Possibly more an ironic connection with being neurotic, though I guess in its New Romantic attitude it, in coincidental hindsight (futuresight?) it might even have slight echos in William Gibson's novel Neuromancer, which was published some 3 years later. Recorded March-May 1981 with HH, RS, Omura, Tony Mansfieds, Manzanera, Andy Makay, Matsutake.
Recorded while Yukihiro Takahashi was in full swing drumming/singing with the Yellow Magic Orchestra, this album might as well have been called a YMO album because both Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto play their instruments here. And naturally the mostly fast rhythms are very similar to those in YMO's music as well as the album's overall mood. But some other musicians make an appearance too, such as Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay both taking a break from Roxy Music.Takahashi is in decent vocal form throughout where the usual echoes of David Bowie and Bryan Ferry from, again, Roxy Music are never far off. On the cover a few pictures of a rather pensive-looking Takahashi are printed but the music is actually rather cheerful. The first few tracks are alright if a bit interchangeable but starting with 'Drip Dry Eyes' (a compilation album favourite) they become excellent.

"I'm not one for using 25 dollar words...so I will just tell you that if you love synth, you will ADORE this album. I first heard the last song on the album, "Something In The Air" on CBC Radio 23 years ago (!!!) This song is NOT the one done by Thunderclap Newman or Tom Petty. It is ethereal and fabulous and man, I can't wait to get a copy of this album again!"

The tune Flashback includes all members of YMO. YT duets with Bill Nelson (plays throughout the album), Zane Grif and Ronny. This album will appeal to YMO fans. The style changes drastically from track to track. Not really a problem since it's very good.
One of the best Yukihiro Takahashi album during his Yellow Magic Orchestra period, it is certainly a varied one. Melody-wise most songs are strong and a few additional singers provide some welcome relief to Takahashi's "characteristic vocal style" (to put it politely), although he does sing with real passion throughout this album. The two short tracks are instrumentals with a Japanese feel, whereas the songs are clearly influenced by, or themselves influenced the early eighties British synthpop scene featuring the likes of the Human League etc.The English-lyric songs are all co-written by Peter Barakan who also helped out YMO in this respect. As usual the other two YMO members help out their friend here, but they only make an appearance on the wonderful 'Flashback', for which Ryuichi Sakamoto also provides the music. Other highlights include 'Sayonara' which has Japanese lyrics, 'This Strange Obsession' (written and partly performed by Zaine Griff), the melancholic 'Disposable Love' about the effects of a relationship breaking up and the fun 'All You've Got To Do'.'The Real You' continues the vocal style first heard on YMO's 1981 album ‘Technodelic’ with its multiple vocal layers sort of sliding over the accompaniment. The last track on the album is a cover of a George Harrison song from the surreal ‘Yellow Submarine’ soundtrack and anybody who knows the heavily psychedelic Beatles original will raise an eyebrow because here Takahashi manages to turn it into a nice upbeat pop-song, although some psychedelic elements like a Hammond organ sound and the well-known Beatles trick of inverted drum-sounds are retained.

"Selecting those songs that best combine melody and muscle, Time and Place is a strong live set mostly interpreting Takahashi's previous repertoire but also adding some new things (plus a version of Bacharach/David's "The April Fools"). The band giving it all a unified feel is keyboardist Keiichi Suzuki, Bill Nelson, Hajime Tachibana (ex-Plastics) and drummer David Palmer. Interestingly, Takahashi doesn't drum — he sings, plays keyboards and guitar."

A short album. With Sakamoto, Iva Davies (Icehouse) and Bill Nelson (Be Bop Deluxe). Takahashi is in very good form with excellent arrangements. One of my favorite post-YMO YT albums I've heard. Recorded Aug-Sep 1984 .
At barely thirty minutes more a maxi-single than a full-length album, this first post-YMO project by Yukihiro Takahashi is also a bit short on ideas. Its atmosphere is slightly lackluster – "moody" perhaps, but "wild" is a definite overstatement. Plenty of harsh industrial sounds and a few contributions from former YMO buddies Sakamoto (Fairlight) and Hosono (bass) as well as Bill Nelson on guitar/vocal can't conceal the fact that the musical material is a bit average. A significant pointer is perhaps the fact that all the song-lyrics come from writers other than Takahashi. On the plus side, Takahashi's voice has never sounded better, making it less of a potential irritation and the addition of a few female backing singers also help things along. The best song is perhaps the Neil Young cover 'Helpless' and the album closes strongly with 'Walking To The Beat', co-written with Iva Davies.

"Wild & Moody is an LP of pretty songs — mainly romantic, though a little lyrically offbeat — dressed (but not tarted up) in electro-dance clothing. Nothing awesome, but nearly all of it delightful."

Light, pop-ish instrumentals plus 2 songs. Koji Ueno and Pierre Barouh appear. Takahashi acts in the movie.

"Poisson d'Avril (the French idiom meaning April Fools) is the soundtrack of a film starring Takahashi. (A large poster of "Yuki" is included.) He was apparently seized by the urge to become Burt Bacharach; a surprisingly large amount of it is movie music, in the style of "sophisticated" '60s romantic comedy."

Instrumentals. Various pieces of fashion show music. Witty sophisticated listening.
I take it that this is music produced for a fashion show. The cd is credited as a collaboration between Yukihiro Takahashi and Yohji Yamammoto. On the back cover it says "For Yohji Yamamoto and Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme spring- summer 87, autumn- winter 87-88 collection in Paris. The music is a combination of piano and computer. Biography :
Yukihiro Takahashi (高橋幸宏 Takahashi Yukihiro, born June 6, 1952) is a Japanese musician, who is best known as the drummer and lead vocalist of the Yellow Magic Orchestra.
Yukihiro Takahashi first came to prominence as the drummer of The Sadistic Mika Band, and became known to western audiences after this band (led by Kazuhiko Katoh, formerly of The Folk Crusaders) toured and recorded in the United Kingdom. After the Sadistic Mika Band disbanded, some of the members (including Takahashi) formed another band called The Sadistics, who released several albums. Finally Takahashi recorded his first solo album Saravah in 1977. In 1978, Takahashi joined Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono to form the Yellow Magic Orchestra.
After the Yellow Magic Orchestra disbanded in the mid 80s, Takahashi went solo and released a large number of solo albums, primarily intended for the Japanese market. Takahashi has collaborated extensively with other musicians, including Bill Nelson, Iva Davies of Icehouse, Keiichi Suzuki of the Moon Riders (often as a duo dubbed "The Beatniks," although Suzuki essentially functioned as a member of Takahashi's backing band during the Moon Riders' brief hiatus) and in particular Steve Jansen. Takahashi has released a single Stay Close and an EP Pulse as a duo with Jansen.
Takahashi participated in temporary reunions of both The Sadistic Mika Band (as the Sadistic Mica Band, missing the lead vocalist Mika who was replaced by Karen Kirishima), and The Yellow Magic Orchestra (as XYMO). Both of these reunions included tours of Japan, and an album of new material.
Currently Takahashi is a member of the duo Sketch Show, with Haruomi Hosono. Sketch Show has released two albums, one of which Loophole has been released in the UK.
His latest solo album Blue Moon Blue was released on 03/15/06 in Japan.

"Takahashi's albums are far less programmatic and predictable than YMO's. He'll go from a reggae-style version of "Stop in the Name of Love" to a new-romantic soap opera to tongue-in-cheek pop powered by galloping synths to poignant soul-searching to a loopy update of Duane Eddy guitar instrumentals. He gives prominence to guitar (mostly played by YMO pal Kenji Omura, although Bill Nelson's e-bow graces much of What, Me Worry? and Phil Manzanera, bringing fellow Roxy Musician Andy Mackay along for the ride with sax and oboe, is on much of Neuromantic)."(http://www.trouserpress.com/entry.php?a=yukihiro_takahashi)

Sheena's successes in 1983 (http://members.fortunecity.com/sheenanews/sewebbio.html) :

March
We've Got Tonight, a duet with Kenny Rogers, hits US #6 and goes to #1 on the US country charts.
We've Got Tonight makes UK #28.

October
Sheena stars in her own NBC-TV special "Sheena Easton...Act One."
Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair) makes US #9.
LP Best Kept Secret makes US #33 and UK #99.

"After the critically acclaimed, but commercially ignored "Madness, Money & Music," Sheena Easton decided to update her sound and image (see album cover) with 1983's "Best Kept Secret." Intent on pursuing dance music, she dumped long-time producer Christopher Neil in favor of Greg Mathieson (Donna Summer, Olivia Newton-John). The move worked surprisingly well, as first single "Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair)" made the Top 10 on both the pop and dance charts, and the album climbed to number 33 on the Billboard album chart. The rest of the set basically follows the same blueprint as "Telefone," upbeat dance tunes heavy on the synthesizers. There are two notable exceptions, however. As with most of Easton's albums, the stand-out tracks are the ballads. Included here are the exquisite "Almost Over You," (which also made the Top 40) and a superb cover of Dusty Springfield's "Just One Smile." The only misstep seems to have been the choice of "Devil In A Fast Car" as the third single over more radio-friendly cuts like "(She's In Love) With Her Radio," and "Best Kept Man." As a bonus, the reissue CD also includes Sheena's 1982 Top 10 duet with Kenny Rogers, "We've Got Tonight", which wasn't previously available on any of her albums. Definently one of Easton's best. Thanks, One Way Records!"

"This has to be one of Sheenas best albums.Less filler and more great tunes."

"sheenas voice and attitude make this an 80"s treasure. every track has a killer vocal and lyric."

Aztec Camera & Polyrock

Aztec Camera

Bio (From Allmusic.com) :

For most intents and purposes, Aztec Camera is Roddy Frame, a Scottish guitarist/vocalist/songwriter. Several other musicians have passed through the band over the years -- including founding members Campbell Owens (bass) and Dave Mulholland (drums) -- but the one constant has been Frame. Throughout his career, he has created a sophisticated, lush, and nearly jazzy acoustic-oriented guitar pop, relying on gentle melodies and clever wordplay inspired by Elvis Costello.

Aztec Camera released their debut album, High Land, Hard Rain, in 1983. Before its release, Owens and Mulholland had left the group, leaving Frame to assemble the record himself. Upon its release, the album won significant amounts of critical praise for its well-crafted, multi-layered pop. After releasing a stop-gap EP, Oblivious, the group's second full-length record, Knife, appeared in 1984. Produced by Mark Knopfler, the album was more polished and immediate than the debut, featuring horn arrangements and a slight R&B influence. Three years later, Roddy Frame returned with Love, which featured musical support from several studio musicians. Love was a synthesized stab at pop-R&B, resulting in his greatest commercial success -- the album launched four hit singles, including the Top Ten "Somewhere in My Heart."

Two years later, Aztec Camera returned to a more guitar-oriented sound with Stray. It wasn't as commercially successful as Love, yet it was a hit with fans who missed the chiming hooks of Frame's early work. Dreamland, released in 1993, followed the same pattern as Stray and achieved about the same amount of commercial and critical success.

Genre: Rock Style: Alternative pop.

High Land, Hard Rain (1983)

Review by Ned Raggett

Some performers never make a bigger splash than with their first record, a situation which the Ramones and De La Soul know all too well. If that's the case, though, said musicians had better make sure that debut is a doozy. Aztec Camera, or more specifically, Roddy Frame, falls squarely into this scenario, because while he has doggedly plugged away ever since with a series of what are, at times, not bad releases, High Land, Hard Rain remains the lovely touchstone of Frame's career. Very much the contemporaries of such well-scrubbed Scottish guitar-pop confectionaries as Orange Juice, but with the best gumption and star quality of them all, Aztec Camera led off the album with "Oblivious," a minimasterpiece of acoustic guitar hooks, lightly funky rhythms, and swooning backing vocals. If nothing tops that on High Land, Hard Rain, most of the remaining songs come very close, while they also carefully avoid coming across like a series of general soundalikes. Frame's wry way around words of love (as well as his slightly nasal singing) drew comparisons to Elvis Costello, but Frame sounds far less burdened by expectations and more freely fun. References from Keats to Joe Strummer crop up (not to mention an inspired steal from Iggy's "Lust for Life" on "Queen's Tattoos"), but never overwhelm Frame's ruminations on romance, which are both sweet and sour. Musically, his capable band backs him with gusto, from the solo-into-full-band showstopper "The Bugle Sounds Again" to the heartstopping guitar work on "Lost Outside the Tunnel." Whether listeners want to investigate further from here is up to them, but High Land, Hard Rain itself is a flat-out must-have.

Polyrock

The New York-based new wave/synth pop band Polyrock formed in the late '70s with a lineup including vocalist Catherine Oblasney, guitarists Billy Robertson and Tommy Robertson, drummer Joseph Yannece, and keyboard player Lenny Aaron. The group signed with RCA by 1980, and delivered their eponymous debut album that same year. Two albums followed in 1981 (Changing Hearts and Electro-Romantic), but Polyrock was broken up by 1982. ROIR released the retrospective No Love Lost in 1986.

Genre: Rock
Styles: Synth pop, new wave.

Polyrock (1980)

Review.

Polyrock could be pitched as Talking Heads under the tutelage of Philip Glass. Their music owes as much of a debt to Television and Brian Eno (specifically Third Uncle), but the Heads/Eno parallel seems to hold up the best. Yet by the time Polyrock arrived at the party (1980), the best hats were already taken, and somehow they got swept into the second wave of new wave artists like Suburban Lawns and Flying Lizards. Polyrock deserved better, but timing is everything in music. Led by brothers Billy and Tommy Robertson, this sextet made intelligent, agitated music that threw giddy melodies into the boiling stew of atonal angst and restless rhythms. Equally at home with instrumentals that sound like Peter Gunn on speed (Bucket Rider) and songs that suggest Ric Ocasek having a very bad day (Romantic Me), its still not a very big home. The eleven songs are driven by the same engine, loopy but never silly, as if in an alternate universe somewhere The B-52s took themselves seriously. With all the name dropping Im doing, you may be tempted to pick this up, and I sure wouldnt stop you. Just a caveat: For me, Polyrocks music has never come from musicians, and without a recognizable brand behind the band, this becomes principled and intelligent but ultimately faceless product. Its not their fault, but if the band ever did any marketing (videos, radio singles, tours) it missed me, and I was paying attention to this sort of thing in 1980. Maybe it wont trouble you this long after the fact, but Ive always felt unsure about according them a high place in the heavens, maybe because sometimes the brightest stars arent the biggest, just the closest. If Philip Glass tight organ patterns push some of your buttons, however, Polyrock might push all of them.

"Finally reissued on CD, this classic synthpop album by this Canadian new romantic band is by far their best. ARIAS & SYMPHONIES sounds something like early Duran Duran of the same era (1981-82), but unlike Duran Duran, this album has been sorely lost to obscurity. At times, lead vocalist Gordon Deppe sounds uncannily like Julian Cope of then Teardrop Explodes. The musicianship from this youthful band (mostly in their teens at the time) is a stunning blend of tight guitar, bass, synthesizers and a whirlwind of synth drums. Above all, this album contains one of the greatest synthpop songs of the day, "Nova Heart", which managed to get some airplay back in the day. "Smiling in Winter", "No More Growing Up", "South American Vacation" and the title track are also outstanding."

"A gem of 'New Romantic' early 80s music: melodic, suave, clever songs. Vintage acoustic electronics (i.e. electronic but played rather than programmed). If you are interested in the fact that a Toronto band was pushing the envelope in 1982 or you like songs from this band you heard on a compilation CD (or MTV circa 1984), then this is a very reasonable value.
The last star was withheld because some of the songs tend to sound alike, and you need to appreciate this genre in order to fully enjoy this album."

"You may have only heard of The Spoons from hearing Nova Heart, one of the most popular new wave songs to be authored by Canadians in the 80's. They did come out with Romantic Traffic which got a lot of airplay, as well. The foundation of the band, high school sweethearts Gordon Deppe (vocals, guitars) and Sandy Horne (bass, vocals) saw changes in the band's line-up a few times, but Deppe's musical genius rings true in Vertigo Tango. The last album for the band before calling it quits in the mid-late 90's, Vertigo Tango is a polished album making virtually every song a veritable hit. The radio-friendly production certainly blended well with their masterful songwriting. The single "Waterline" was an important comeback hit in the late 80's; however, the other nine tracks didn't get much airplay, which was a shame, considering Deppe's songwriting abilities. The songs have a pop-oriented feel, which may or may not appeal to you, but they get under your skin. After a couple of listens, this was one of my favourite albums of 1988. This band had the opportunity of opening up for big headliner names in the early 80's, David Bowie, The Smiths, to mention just a couple. After several years on the retro circuit in the 90's, the now defunct band has seen a couple of reunions, namely in the Toronto area, from where they hail. Deppe joined other talented musicians to form Fluid, a three-member alt-rock album titled "5 Star Fall" in the late 90's. It's quite a departure from Vertigo Tango, which may or may not offer Spoons fans a musical snack. "

" super CD, containing all of the early Spoons gems. I was lucky enough to catch them live in 1994, reunited and touring in support of this collection (Sandy Horne = wow!). The only quibble I have with "Collectible Spoons" is that it excludes material from their very good 1988 album, "Vertigo Tango". I would have liked to see "When Time Turns Around" and the superb "Waterline" included on the collection. I know those later songs didn't match the popularity of the Spoons' earlier work, but they still deserved to be present on this career retrospective. Notwithstanding that small flaw, "Collectible Spoons" is well worth the money for any serious fan of early-eighties music. It even includes what I believe is the best New Wave song of all time: "Nova Heart"."

"I never really appreciated the Spoons when they were at their peak of popularity in Toronto. I mean, really, Thrifty's Jeans? And that "Tell No Lies" track always drove me nuts. Of course, everything else they did was brilliant, and this compilation CD is really something special. Go buy it."

"Those minor key fluid synth lines, passionate lyrics and drum machine sounding drums are all here! Good solid riffs!"

Biography :
The Spoons. Pop group, formed in 1979 in Burlington, Ont, west of Toronto. Original members were Gordon Deppe (guitar, vocals), Sandy Horne (bass, vocals), Brett Wickens (keyboards) and Derrick Ross (drums). Wickens was replaced by Rob Preuss in 1981, and Preuss and Ross were replaced by Scott MacDonald and Steve Kendry respectively in 1986. The Spoons enjoyed early success with teenaged audiences on the basis of the debut LP Stick Figure Neighbourhood (Ready LR-012) in 1981 and the 12-inch single 'Nova Heart' in 1982, both of which were in the synthesizer-based 'electro-pop' style of the day.
Developing a tougher rock style in the course of the 1980s, The Spoons made little impact on record outside of Canada but maintained a national profile with such songs (and corresponding videos) as 'Arias & Symphonies' (from an LP of the same title, Ready LR-022) in 1982, 'Old Emotions' (from Talkback, Ready LR-039) in 1983, 'Tell No Lies' and 'Romantic Traffic' in 1984, 'Bridge Over Borders' (from an album of the same title, Anthem ANR-1-1050) in 1986, and 'When Time Turns Around' (from Vertigo Tango, Anthem ANR-1-1054) in 1988. Canadian sales of both Arias & Symphonies and Talkback exceeded 50,000 copies. The Spoons have toured extensively in Canada and occasionally - eg, in 1983 opening for Culture Club and in 1987 opening for Survivor and Human League - in the USA. The band was still active in 1990 when Deppe and MacDonald introduced Punch House, and Horne and Kendry formed Hurricane Jane. The Spoons toured and opened for acts such as Culture Club, The Police, and Survivor and were pioneers on the pop video scene.

About Sandy Horne:
Slowing down a bit to raise a family, Sandy has formed her own all-female "alternative classical" group calle
d "Amaris", and last year she started working with James, wandering across the street to help him record his double-CD retrospective Mining For Gold. This year her musical input was a major part of the sound behind the folk legend James Gordon's new release "One Timeless Moment".Sandy adds bass, vocals, and hair to the proceedings, and sings a couple of her own songs in the process. James Gordon and Sandy Horne cover a lot of musical territory in their new duo, with original songs ranging from the historical to the hysterical. They have discovered that their combined experiences with touring and recording in the folk and rock genres...

Biography
Seona Dancing was a 1980s British pop group best known for providing Ricky Gervais with his first taste of fame.
The band was formed in 1982 by aspiring pop stars Bill Macrae and Ricky Gervais. They were signed to London Records. Their single "More to Lose", released in 1983, only made it to number 70 on the Billboard charts, follow up "Bitter Heart" reached number 79 in the UK charts, and the band quickly disbanded in 1984. A year later, in 1985, a DJ from 99.5 DWRT-FM in Manila in the Philippines started playing a song called "Fade" by Medium (also billed as "Medium" by Fade). It became a runaway hit, and the angsty theme song for many Filipino teenagers in the mid 1980s. Eventually, the identity of the song was revealed as "More to Lose" by Seona Dancing. Bill Macrae faded into obscurity, but years later Ricky Gervais found new fame as the co-writer and star of the hit BBC comedy The Office, and follow up Extras.
(Gervais managed Suede for a short time in their early days. Not thinking they would make it big, he dropped them.) (www.allmusic.com)

"In the mid 1980s, Duran splintered off into two side projects...Power Station and Arcadia. What did it prove? Well we finally knew which members were fans of Chic and who were fans of Bryan Ferry/David Sylvian...but enough on that...
This album was an amazing accomplishment. Three members from what some called a bubblegum-pop group came together and forged an album of beauty with the helping hands of jazz musician Mark Isham, avant-guarde percussionist David Van Tiegam, David Gilmor and Sting...all added credibility to the project.
Here the music is textured...layered and beautiful. The funky grind of "Election Day", the bittersweet chugging melody of "Goodbye is Forever", the simple sweetness of "Missing", the sadness of Simon's voice and just pure poetry in "The Promise" and the crystalline beauty of the epic "Lady Ice".
This album was a great "teething-toy" for those would later listen to David Sylvian, Bryan Ferry, amd delve into jazz and avant-guarde music.
I encourage anyone interested in something better than pop music to buy this CD! You won't regret it!"

"In 1985, Duran Duran underwent a big change. John and Andy Taylor went off to form Power Station with Robert Palmer and Simon, Nick and Roger stayed to release an album under the name Arcadia. Nick and Simon have both been quoted saying that Arcadia is different from their previous albums with the full group and that it is nothing they could have released as Duran Duran not just because of individual differences but also because of the kind of pressure they were under and the risk of recreating the same type of stuff unless they branched out--- just as Power Station was something that stood alone as well. I say this cause lots of people focus on the cynical side of the break-up. I'm so glad Arcadia existed, despite what some say about it because the music is just excellent. I was glad Simon, Nick and John reformed the original band, but this was a great side project.
I think all of the songs on this album are perfect and I just love the way Duran Duran and Arcadia uses backup vocals. I don't know how to describe the songs so I'll say what the band said about them. Nick claimed that they got the name Arcadia from an inscription that was "mysterious, mystic" which they thought fit with the album. He claimed they were "European" sounding and a little bit "Hispanic" sounding. I'm sorry, I'm not good at describing songs, I just know if I like them or not. They also called the songs "atmospheric" as opposed to the other Duran Duran offspring Power Station which is more rock. I don't think you have to like Duran Duran to like this CD. They are two quite different styles though I believe DD constantly altered their styles throughout their career. But I think you would have to be willing to give it an honest shot."

The second album released as a soundtrack for the scandal film- one of the few serious NDW films "Der Fan"(also on DVD appeared!). Bodo played the main roll beside Desirée.Musically the album similar to their first one,but in contrast to the debut album here the electronic portion in the music outweighs, particularly on the instrumental second side - "abfahrt" and "stahlherz" are absolutely typical for the German music of this time. The sound on the first side is less dark and minimalistic,as it was in their first album
There were two hits on it :"fan fan Fanatisch" and "da steht dir gut"( two more good NDW songs : "augenblick" and "Fan")

After the second album, the most people lost sight of the band, who they connected with two songs :„Dreiklangsdimensionen“ und „Fan Fan Fanatisch“.The German hitmakers dominated the NDW with such bands like Relax, Spider Murphy Gang and other projects.Just few people knew that the band released their third Lp,that disappeared undeservedly, as we can realize by hearing it.However it couldn't reach the standard of the previous albums, because they didn't develop, but they became more superficial.Obviously Bodo and the other musicians tried to follow the sound of 1984.Looking back it seems to be a mistake. In spite of that it contains several real hits, especially the song „Nur ein Wort“ sung by Brigitte Kunze from Ideal, and „Computerbeat“. How ever the album wasn't a great succes.

" Distanz is according to my opinion the weakest of the three albums, but nevertheless good NDW music."

Biography :
Rheingold was a top synth-pop band in the german new wave era from 1980 to 1986.The leader of the band was Bodo Staiger, who played together with Marius Müller-Westernhagen in Harakiri for two years before founded Rheingold.Their goal was making simply good music. Bodo Staiger produced the solo project of Wolgang Flür ( Kraftwerk) : Yamo - Time Pie (1997)

HUGH NICHOLSON has had a long and successful career as composer and recording artist with POETS, TRASH, MARMALADE, BLUE, GARY NUMAN and also in his own right as a solo artist.

"OK, so it's been over a decade since I've heard the EP -- to be honest, I'm not sure there was ever an actual album. What I do recall is Gary doing a standard pop tune, complete with a catchy chorus with a female vocal backing him up. So, my review is this: if you are a bigtime Numan collector, collect. If not, you're looking at paying a lot for this--- album? or EP. What a horrible critic I am, someone please post some more info on this."
